Skateboarders are the authorities!
Let's cut the crap...I could tell you that these boards are the best in the world...so can all the other skateboard companies. The bottom line is that these boards are made by skateboarders for skateboarders who know what they want! We've all been harassed by cops, security guards, kicked out of spots, endured bails...but we still skate because it's in our blood. We've been through a lot of boards in our life and we know what a board needs: quality and durability. That's why every board that comes out of our factory has been cared for by a skateboarder who knows what's up!
How to recognize a good quality deck?
Part 1 - The wood
Have you ever heard of the expression "The mild steel of wood"? In North America, this saying is commonly used when talking about Hardrock Canadian Maple. This is why Hardrock Canadian Maple has always been and will remain the best wood to make skateboards. Real skateboarders give a consistently hard time to their deck and need the best quality wood to have a board that will keep its pop and stiffness longer.
But how can you tell the difference?
1) If the deck cracks around the trucks after a couple of uses, ITS PROBABLY NOT HARDROCK CANADIAN MAPLE.
2) If the deck chips and cracks on the edges and tips, ITS PROBABLY NOT HARDROCK CANADIAN MAPLE.
3) TRY THE STIFFNESS TEST!
a. Put your board on the floor, facing down (wheels up)
b. Stand with one foot on the middle of the board
Æ If the board touches the floor easily, its showing poor stiffness
Æ If the board flattens on the floor, its showing very poor stiffness
4) TRY THE POP TEST!
a. Hold the deck on one end (facing down)
b. Let the other end hit the floor (better on a hard surface)
Æ If the board doesnt bounce, its showing no pop
Dont be shy. Try it with different boards.
Compare different brands. Compare your board with your friends boards. PREMIUM decks are handmade in Canada with 100% Hardrock Canadian Maple (it grows in their back yard!). All 7 plys (or 9 plys) are Hardrock Canadian Maple, not just the bottom and top ones! What also contributes to the stiffness with PREMIUM and AVERA, is the variance of the plys thickness in one deck. AVERA offers even more stiffness (35% more) because of the very thin middle ply surrounded by 2 thicker plys. Decks made in China, because they are being massed produced, have plys of the same thickness. This is one reason why they arent as stiff and poppy as Canadian made decks.
Be careful what people tell you.
If a deck is made of Hardrock Canadian Maple but made out of Canada, it will never be as good quality. WHY? Because the wood is exported from Canada not as logs, but already cut in plys (Canadian legislation prohibits the export of logs). Think about it
A thin ply being exposed to climate (temperature, humidity) variances
Do you really believe the wood will be as good after spending over 45 days on a ship, in those conditions? If its too humid, the wood expands and curves. If its too dry, the wood "shrinks" and cracks. NOT GOOD AT ALL!
